Container cargo handled at South Korean seaports jumped to a record high last year as improving global market conditions boosted trade, a government report revealed today.
The total cargo containers processed amounted to 19.33 million TEUs last year, up 18.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the report by the transportation and maritime affairs ministry.
Asia Pulse reported that the figure is the highest ever for a single year. It is 7.8 percent higher than the previous record of 17.93 million TEUs in 2008.
The increase is attributed to improving global market conditions that bolstered domestic and overseas trade.
