Maersk Line launched a new weekly service this month linking ports on the U.S. East Coast with Peru and Ecuador.
The Spondylus service, named after the seashell that was once used as currency in Ecuador, provides exporters with reefer service. Fresh fruit from Peru and Ecuador will reach East Coast markets Miami, Newark, Philadelphia and Savannah with weekend arrivals to allow for Monday-morning cargo availability and on-site inspections by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Maersk said the southbound leg of the Spondylus service provides transportation for department store merchandise from the U.S. to South America. The transshipment hub in Panama will help use other Latin America services to transport the merchandise to other South American countries.
The port rotation is: Paita, Guayaquil, Balboa, Miami. Newark, Philadelphia, Savannah, Miami, Manzanillo (Panama), Balboa and Esmeraldas.
The service, which calls the Packer Avenue Marine Terminal in Philadelphia, follows by one month the arrival of CMA CGM's Black Pearl Service, which started calling PAMT on Jan. 28 and is now fully operational.
The Black Pearl Service links on northbound routes from San Antonio and Arica in Chile; Callao in Peru; Guayaquil in Ecuador; and also Manzanillo, Panama; Kingston, Jamaica; and Miami.
