Guangzhou Port saw its container volumes soar by almost 25 percent in September compared with last year, the third consecutive month of record throughput.
In the first three quarters of the year, Guangzhou handled 8.3 million TEU, up 17 percent compared with the same period in the previous year.
Foreign trade volumes saw significant growth following Maersk Line’s decision to use Nansha Port as its third gateway in South China, the port said in a statement.
In the first three quarters, Guangzhou foreign trade throughput increased 23.7 percent to 2.5 million TEU.
More than one million TEUs crossed the Guangzhou Port Group’s wharves during the month, but the South China port warned that October’s figures would not be so robust.
“The situation in October will not be as well as September according to the figures,” the port said. “It’s estimated there will be a slight decline.”
