SAVANNAH container volume increased 3.8 per cent in August year on year to 280,873 TEU in August with railway movement rising three per cent, announced the Georgia Ports Authority.
"Our strong partnerships with CSX and Norfolk Southern have increased our rail participation to over 19 per cent of total throughput," said GPA executive director Curtis Foltz.
Otherwise, Georgia ports handled a total of 2.5 million tons of cargo in August, up 8.5 per cent over the same month last year.
For the first two months of FY2014, the GPA moved 4.74 million tons of freight across all docks, up 219,317 tons, or 4.8 per cent year on year.
August also registered a high of 180,572 truck moves at Savannah's Garden City Terminal.
While it was not a record month for bulk cargo, the GPA still saw significant growth in that sector. Over the four and a half week period, bulk cargo contributed 188,872 tons to total volumes, up 51,781 tons or 37.8 per cent compared to August 2012.
