May container volumes higher in Los Angeles, Long Beach

   The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach both reported higher containerized cargo volumes in the month of May.


   Los Angeles handled 689,141 TEU, an 8.2-percent increase over May 2013.


   Import containers amounted to 351,402 TEU, a 7.75-percent increase; exports were up 2.3 percent to 158,473 TEU. Empty container volumes were up 15 percent.


   For the first five months of 2014, overall volumes are 3,315,788 TEU, an 8.2-percent increase compared to the same period in 2013.


   Cargo container numbers edged up 2.7 percent last month at the Port of Long Beach, making for the Southern California seaport’s busiest May since 2007. The port handled 312,439 TEU of imports, which is a 2.3-percent increase compared to May 2013. Exports were flat with a slight decline of 0.3 percent to 146,702 TEU. Empty containers rose 7.1 percent to 140,368 TEU. 


   In the first five months of 2014, Long Beach handled 6.73 million TEU, an increase of 1.3 percent over the first five months of 2013.
