SCHWERIN-PARCHIM Airport in central Germany aims to become a transit hub for Chinese freighters in Europe, according to Pang Yuliang, chairman of LinkGlobal Logistics.
LinkGlobal Logistics, a Beijing-based logistics firm, acquired a 100 per cent stake in Schwerin-Parchim Airport in July and handled the first freighter from China, a Boeing 747-200 freighter, which departed from Shanghai, on July 15, reports Logistics Week.
Currently Chinese airlines have no transit hubs in Europe and still maintain point-to-point connections with European airports. In the event Schwerin-Parchim Airport becomes a hub for Chinese airlines in Europe, cargo-handling charges for such planes would be greatly reduced, said Mr Pang.
This comes as air cargo volumes from China to Europe have been growing steadily in recent years, with demand for Africa services surging.
Schwerin-Parchim Airport is 130 kilometres from Hamburg and 170 kilometres from Berlin. Flying time from China to Schwerin-Parchim is about one hour less than to Frankfurt and Amsterdam.
