ZIM Integrated Shipping Services will buy up to eight 12,600-TEU containerships for US$170 million each as part of the line's strategy to expand shipping capacity, reported Globes, an Israeli business news portal.
The $1.36 billion purchase will substantially increase the Israeli-based carrier's fleet when the vessels arrive in 2012.
Zim is reportedly considering contracts with both local and international companies affiliated with Israel Corp's parent company Ofer Brothers.
Earlier this year the line purchased two 2,450-TEU containerships with an option to buy an additional two. These vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2010-11.
