Munich Airport has opened a new freight facility that it says positions it for growth long into the future. Volumes of air cargo handled at Munich Airport quadrupled in the 14 years between 1992 and 2006 from 100,000 to more than 400,000 tonnes.
The new facility's first phase has 15,000 square metres for the use of freight forwarding companies and four of them - AHT GmbH, Airtruck Befrachtungsgesellschaft mbH, Detzer Aircargo Service GmbH and Geis SDV GmbH (Future Group) – already have committed to move there. A further 15,000 square metres is planned in a second phase of the project.
