Berlin Airpots ready for summer

3/11/2008 10:00:22 AM

At Berlin Airports the summer season starts on the 30th of March: featuring 10 new destinations and 13 additional services to popular holiday hotspots, the new summer flight schedule reveals Berlin Airports’ rapidly expanding service network. Two new carriers, the Romanian airline Blue Air and Italian carrier Meridiana, will be offering services from and to Schoenefeld and Tegel. All in all, passengers will be able to fly to 155 destinations from Berlin this summer.

The airlines have booked 133,953 take-offs and landings in Berlin for summer 2008, a rise in flight movements of eight per cent over the same period last year. Berlin Airports’ CEO Dr. Rainer Schwarz is pleased with the development: “We are aiming to continue and surpass the success of 2007. With new destinations and additional services, Berlin is at the centre of an even better, denser and more attractive network this summer.”

The three biggest airlines that service Berlin have announced that they will be substantially increasing their seating capacities this summer, with Lufthansa boosting capacity by 16.9%, easyJet increasing by 14.9% and Air Berlin adding 10.8% seating capacity.

So what are the hot destinations for the summer? The Greek islands are proving to be very popular: four airlines fly from Berlin to Heraklion, Chania, Corfu, Kos and Rhodes. Flights to holiday destinations in Ibiza, Monastir and the Red Sea take passengers off to enjoy the sun and beaches. For all those planning a summer city break, new destinations include Edinburgh, Florence and Bucharest.

All new destinations from Berlin-Tegel:

Lufthansa will be starting the summer season with seven new destinations: services from Tegel include twice-weekly services to Dublin, Istanbul, Moscow and Palma de Mallorca, a daily service to Milan, four services a week to Ibiza and a weekly service to Talinn.

Air Berlin’s new offerings include the Egyptian city of Marsa Alam. From May 2008, the airline will be providing a weekly service to this Red Sea destination.

The Italian airline Alitalia will be flying holidaymakers to Rome once a week from March 2008.

Italian carrier Meridiana will be offering services to Italy with the introduction of three weekly services to Florence.

From May 2008, Germania will be flying weekly to Bastia on Corsica and the Greek city of Heraklion on Crete.

All new destinations from Berlin-Schoenefeld:

The airline Blue Air will be flying three times a week to the Romanian capital Bucharest from March 2008.

Condor will be offering five new destinations from Schoenefeld: in addition to flights to the port city of Chania on Crete, the carrier will also be flying to the Greek islands Corfu, Kos and Rhodes. From May 2008, the carrier will also be offering a weekly service to Venice.

easyJet has added three new destinations to its flight schedule: from April 2008 the budget airline will be flying three times a week to Heraklion and Thessalonica and weekly to Ibiza.

From April 2008, Germanwings will be flying twice weekly to Bucharest and offering a weekly service to Heraklion.

The Tunisian airline Karthago Airlines will be offering a weekly service to the Tunisian coastal city of Monastir from May 2008.

From September 2008, Ryanair will be offering four services a week to the Scottish capital, Edinburgh.

From June 2008, Sun D’or International Airlines will be flying twice weekly to Tel Aviv in Israel.
