COSCO Container Lines will continue as an independent operator in the Far East/Mexico/Panama trade after it ends its partnership with Evergreen Line later this month.
The two carriers are set to end their joint CUE service with Evergreen already announcing it will start its own replacement called the Far East-Panama Service (FPS).
COSCO said today that from early June it will continue with the CUE using seven ships of about 2,800 TEUs. The port rotation will be Shanghai, Ningbo, Yantian, Hong Kong, Lazaro Cardenas, Balboa and Shanghai.
The Chinese carrier said the CUE will offer "significantly improved transit time from Far East to Central America by up to three to four days because of fast vessel deployment."
COSCO added that by calling at Balboa on Panama's West Coast and offering rail connection to Cristobal on the East Coast -- from where it can serve the Caribbean market by feeder -- it will avoid vessel delays due to congestion of the Panama Canal.
