IMO votes to make climate change key theme for 2009 agenda

7/3/2008 10:13:21 AM

The UN's International Maritime Organisation (IMO) recently voted to make global green issues the central theme of its 2009 activities.

"The choice of this theme will galvanize action and add the IMO's contribution to world efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions," said IMO secretary general Efthimios Mirtopoulus.

Mr Mirtopoulus added that the IMO would aim to present a determined response to its responsibilities and a robust position at next year's climate change conference in Copenhagen.

In a statement the IMO council reiterated its appreciation to the US Government for supporting and approving a parallel event to celebrate the World Maritime Day next year.

The IMO, a United Nations specialised agency, has responsibility for the safety and security of shipping and the prevention of marine pollution by ships.
