DHL launches direct LCL services from Indonesia to US and Germany

8/21/2009 10:27:50 AM

DHL has launched two guaranteed weekly LCL services connecting Indonesia's busiest port, Tanjung Priok in Jakarta, to Los Angeles in the US and Hamburg in Germany.

In 2008, Indonesia's non-oil exports to the US totalled more than US$12.5 billion, making the US Indonesia's second largest export market after Japan. Exports to Germany in the same period reached US$2.5 billion.

Operated by DHL's in-house carrier, Danmar Lines, these new weekly direct LCL services shave up to a week off transit times, with shipments from Jakarta arriving in Los Angeles and Hamburg in 22 days and 25 days respectively.

Shipments arriving in LA can be delivered to an additional 54 US destinations via DHL's inland network.

According to Steve Ryan, managing director of DHL Global Forwarding Indonesia, the introduction of the LCL service in Indonesia supports the government's plans to turn Tanjung Priok Port into an international hub that can compete with other ports in the region.

The launch of direct services from Indonesia to the US and Germany marks the introduction of 19 new direct LCL routes launched by DHL in 2009, including:

• South China to North America - Shenzhen to New York

India to the UK - Chennai to Felixstowe

China to Europe and the US & Canada - Shenzhen to Hamburg, Genoa, Southampton, Rotterdam, Antwerp, Le Havre and Vancouver

Japan to the US - Tokyo and Yokohama to Chicago

Thailand to the US, Germany and Japan - Bangkok to Los Angeles, Hamburg and Tokyo

Malaysia to the US and China - Port Kelang to Los Angeles and Shanghai and to Hamburg, Germany

DHL operates the world's largest LCL network, handling more than two million cubic metres of LCL freight a year via 45,000 point-pairs.
