According to a Reuters report, Lufthansa Cargo's CEO Carsten Spohr said that if night flights are banned at its main hub in Frankfurt, the carrier might give up its fleet of freighters.
"Everything that goes toward a single-digit number (of flights allowed per night) would mean that it no longer pays off to have our own cargo fleet," said Spohr.
His comments come after months of talks about whether night flights should be banned at Germany's largest airport to limit noise pollution after the addition of another runway in 2011.
Plans to expand Frankfurt airport were approved two years ago, on condition that night flights were restricted to seventeen per night between 23h00 and 05h00 to reduce noise.
According to Lufthansa, it would require an average of 23 flights per night by 2020 for passenger and cargo flights.
Reuters reports that Spohr said that shifting Lufthansa Cargo's operations to another city, such as Leipzig, was out of the question.
