The Australian government said it would give foreign airlines better access to the country's four major gateways – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth – for services that also make stopovers at regional airports, reported Dow Jones Newswires.
The move is designed to make Australia's regional international airports such as Cairns, Broome and Darwin more attractive to international carriers, Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said.
The government will also offer foreign airlines the right to operate from regional international airports into neighbouring countries such as New Zealand and the island nations of the Pacific.
