Latvia might attract new railway cargo from China, according to Ugis Magone, CEO of Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railway, LDz), Baltic News Service reported.
The LDz head indicated that the whole Asian region was highly promising, but that China was Latvia's future hope.
"Currently, more than 60 percent of freight carried by Latvian railroads comes from Russia. And chances of increasing these volumes are slim. On the contrary, we may even lose some of them as Russia opens its Ustluga port near St Petersburg," said Magonis.
The LDz CEO also said that China, meanwhile, might be the country that could provide entirely new cargos for the Eastern-Western transport corridor.
Magonis admitted, however, that it would take a lot of preparatory work to attract Chinese freight.
"It is necessary to determine how these cargos would be shipped, what loading methods and sites would be used. Infrastructure and tariffs are important as well. If all these things are sorted out then there is a hope for Chinese cargos," Magonis said.
