HKIA Cargo Tonnage and Air Traffic Movements Set New Monthly Records

11/16/2010 10:16:26 AM

Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) saw another busy month in October, with cargo tonnage and aircraft movements breaking new monthly records for the second and third time respectively this year. Fuelled by burgeoning demand, HKIA handled 373,000 tonnes of cargo last month, up by 15.5% compared to the same period last year. Aircraft movements registered year-on-year growth of 13.7% reaching 27,195.

During the month, the airport also saw a continuous upward trend in passenger traffic and recorded a double-digit growth of 11.9%, reaching 4.4 million.

The growth in passenger traffic for the month was mainly driven by transfer/transit and visitors traffic which saw a rise of 17% and 14% respectively from a year ago. Passenger traffic in all key regions recorded double-digit year-on- year growth and the Mainland continued to be the best performer.

Cargo tonnage growth was driven by robust export and transshipment, both of which registered a yearly increase of 18% compared to the same month last year. Import increased by 8% year-on-year in the month. Traffic to/from key consumption markets in North America and Europe continued its strong momentum with double-digit year-on-year growth.

During the first 10 months, HKIA handled 42.4 million passengers and processed 3.4 million tonnes of cargo, representing a cumulative growth of 11% and 27.1% respectively. Aircraft movements surged 8.8 % to 252,085.
