Africa's Ethiopian Airlines transported 87 per cent of the total freight by African airlines in 2009, the African Airlines Association (AFRAA) annual report claims.
"Ethiopian Airlines is one of the airlines to realise the huge, profitable opportunities in cargo services and the airline has invested heavily in modern facilities at its headquarters at Bole International Airport to capitalise on this," AFRAA said.
The 22 airlines that provided data reported carrying more than 560,000 tons of freight in 2009, an increase of some three per cent over 2008.
The report also said more than 74 per cent of the total cargo was carried by four airlines: EgyptAir (MS), Ethiopian Airlines (ET), Kenya Airways (KQ) and South African Airways (SA).
