APM's Vietnam port opens in March

2/18/2011 10:23:14 AM

Dutch-based port operator cwill open next month a port in southern Vietnam that will be able to handle the world's largest boxships, Danish daily Jyllands-Posten reported.

Container throughput at ports in Vietnam has been showing strong growth, thus creating opportunities for Vietnamese Cai Mep International Terminal (CMIT), a joint venture of APM Terminals, Vietnam National Shipping Lines and Saigon Port, CMIT director Michael Them Rasmussen said.

Vietnam needs more ports to respond to the developing Asian market and the government has decided on expansion to strengthen competition in the country, according to Rasmussen.

The new port will be capable of accommodating giant containerships of 11,000 TEUs. A potential customer will be Danish box carrier Maersk Line.

The company has so far used the facilities of Singapore-based port operator PSA International but will switch to CMIT's services if quality and prices are better.
