Scandinavian airline SAS has signed an agreement to lease five Next-Generation 737-800 airliners from aircraft leasing firm GE Capital Aviation Services, reported Dow Jones Newswires.
It has also signed a memorandum of understanding with GECAS regarding the lease of a further 12 Boeing 737-700s. "The lease arrangements imply limited aircraft investment in 2011," the airline said.
SAS previously said it would phase out its MD80 and Boeing 737 Classic aircraft at its Stockholm and Oslo airbases and replace them with Boeing Next Generation 737 planes.
It said recently it would also phase out the MD80 aircraft at its Copenhagen airbase, replacing them with Airbus A320 models. The replacement will start in 2012 and should be completed by 2016. SAS operates 17 MD80s in Copenhagen.
