THE new Bucher 6,800-square metre cargo terminal in the north cargo area of Frankfurt-Hahn Airport opened for business this week after six months of construction.
The EUR6 million (US$7.9 million) cargo terminal, which includes 1,400 square metres of office space, has direct access to the airport's new apron. Offices will be mostly used by airlines and cargo handling companies.
Bucher Group's subsidiary Hahn Cargo Services GmbH (HCS) will mainly handle orders from Fraport Cargo Services, a subsidiary of Fraport AG. In 2006, the second year HCS has been in business, the company is expected to move 36,000 metric tons of air cargo.
In a company statement, Gerhard Bucher, managing director of Fraport, said: "I expect our new terminal to reach the limit of its capacity as early as next year. We figure that we will handle 85,000 to 90,000 metric tons."
Some 85,000 metric tons went through Frankfurt-Hahn Airport from January to October 2006, 18 per cent more than in the previous year. Frankfurt-Hahn is the fourth-largest cargo airport in Germany.
Bucher Group, a medium-sized corporate conglomerate, has been doing business at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport since 1993. The terminal and the entire grounds are monitored by camera and meet the safety demands of its international customers. Special technical facilities include both an integrated freezer room as well as a refrigerated area for perishables, said the company statement.
