THE volume of transport along the Yangtze River in China is expected to reach 990 million tons in 2006, a rise of 15.1 per cent over the volume in 2005, according to a report in the People's Daily.
The Yangtze waterway is said to have become one of the world's busiest inland transport rivers with the largest cargo volume, the report said.
Trunk line traffic last year reached 700 million tons, which is 1.6 times the total volume of cargo transported though the Mississippi, and 3.1 times that of the Rhine waterway.
The seven provinces and two municipalities along the Yangtze generate more than 41 per cent of China's economic aggregate. At present, cargo moved along the waterway is 80 per cent iron ore, 72 per cent crude oil and 83 per cent coal, which is required by enterprises located along the river.
