Myanmar Airways ramping up alliances with carriers

9/10/2012 10:44:59 AM

Myanmar Airways International is ramping up alliances with foreign air carriers in anticipation of sharp growth in passenger and air cargo volume, managing director Si Thu told The Nikkei.

Business travel and tourism to Myanmar is expected to surge as democratic reforms in the nation progress.

As Myanmar's sole international airline, Yangon-based MAI owns four Airbus A320s that fly to seven cities in six nations, including Thailand and Singapore.

MAI will add two more A320s to its fleet by the end of October and launch two new routes between the central Myanmar city of Mandalay and Bangkok and the Indian city of Gaya. It will begin offering a Yangon-Hong Kong service before year's end and add flights to existing routes, according to the airline executive.

MAI is applying for International Air Transport Association membership, which would make it easier to form alliances with other airlines. It is preparing to establish code-sharing arrangements with All Nippon Airways for flights between Yangon and Tokyo, along with a similar setup with Korean Air between Yangon and Seoul.
