Hong Kong based Cathay Pacific Cargo - affected by the downturn in Asia-Europe freight - is considering its options for the cargo market. The carrier is a major global player in the freighter market with 26 freighters now and 10 on order.
Cathay ceo John Slosar said it may no longer make sense to convert old passenger aircraft to freighters in order to have cheap assets at a low cost. He said in a recent interview that older planes are not fuel efficient and cannot compete with new aircraft.
However, he implied Cathay will look to the longer term in its planning and won't be involved in knee-jerk responses to market downturns.
