UASC Sets Peak-Season, Port Congestion Surcharges

United Arab Shipping Company will implement a peak-season surcharge on westbound Asia-Europe cargo, starting Jan. 12, 2013.   The planned surcharge will be $325 per 20-foot-equivalent unit.  It will apply to all cargo and containers, including special equipment, moving from Far East to ports in North Europe, the western Mediterranean and Adriatic region, UASC said in a trade notice.   Separately, the Middle East carrier said it will impose a “U.S. port congestion surcharge” effective Dec. 29 in the event of an East and Gulf Coast work stoppage. For all containers that exit U.S. ports, the carrier will charge $800 per 20-foot-equivalent unit and $1,000 per 40-foot-equivalent unit.   The move follows a similar congestion surcharge annoucement by Hong Kong-based carrier Orient Overseas Container Line.   The Journal of Commerce
