SOUTHWESTERN city Chongqing is planning to develop a road transportation route to ASEAN countries, starting from its Nanpeng Road Logistics Base.
At present, most of Chongqing cargo is shipped on Yangtze River to Shanghai then loaded onto ships bound for South East Asia. The whole journey covers more than 6,000 kilometres and takes 18 days. But the new route cut transit times two thirds.
ASEAN has become the largest trading partner of Chongqing, according to Xinhua's report. Last year, Chongqing's trade with ASEAN surged 114.1 per cent to US$9.82 billion. By 2020, the figure will climb to $50 billion.
