Hamburg Sud takes charge of world's biggest reefer box ship - 9,814-TEU

7/11/2013 9:51:49 AM

KOREAN shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries has delivered the 9,814-TEU Cap San Marco to Hamburg Sud, the second of 10 high reefer capacity vessels, of which six are owned and four are chartered.

The carrier ordered the six units in March 2011, and financing was provided by Greek company Enesel SA (NS Lemos) for the four other ships, through a long-term charter deal with Hamburg Sud, reports Alphaliner.

Two of the four remaining owned vessels will be delivered this year and the last two in January 2014. The four ships owned by Enesel will also be delivered next year.

They will be the largest ships in Hamburg Sud's fleet, and equipped with 2,100 reefer plugs, the world's biggest reefer vessels that have the capacity to transport 110,000 cubic metres of refrigerated cargo.

The Cap San Marco follows closely behind the Cap San Nicolas, which were both christened on May 23. The second ship in the series is to join the new multicarrier Far East-East Coast South America Loop 2, one of three loops launched in July by Maersk Line, CMA CGM, Hamburg Sud, CSAV, CSCL and Hanjin Shipping, replacing existing services (SEAS 2/ASAX 2/ASAS 2/NGX 2), the report said.

The six shipping lines will jointly operate a total of 33 ships ranging in size from 7,400 TEU to 9,800 TEU on three weekly services.
