Ocean Carrier Rate Revision Roundup for Aug. 16

Major container lines have announced rate increases for a variety of trades, as detailed below, slated to take effect in August, September and October.

Intra-Asia

Four carriers implemented rate hikes on Aug. 15:

  • APL increased rates in its trade from South Korea to Nhava Sheva and Pipava, India, by $50 per 20-foot container, $100 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container and $130 per 45-foot container.
  • Emirates Shipping Line raised rates on all westbound shipments from the Far East and Southeast Asia to the Middle East by $200 per 20-foot container and $400 per 40-foot container.
  • CMA CGM increased rates from Asia to the Persian Gulf by $200 per 20-foot-equivalent unit, and to Sri Lanka, West India and Pakistan by $100 per TEU.
  • Maersk Line boosted rates on its trade from China and Hong Kong to the Middle East by $100 per 20-foot container and $200 per 40-foot, 40-foot high-cube and 45-foot container.

Starting Sept. 1, Hapag-Lloyd will boost rates from East Asia, excluding Japan, to the Red Sea and Persian Gulf by $300 per TEU, and to the Indian subcontinent by $200 per TEU.  

Asia-Europe

On Aug. 8, CMA CGM increased rates from Asia, including Japan, Southeast Asia and Bangladesh, to the east and west Mediterranean, Adriatic and Black Sea by $150 per TEU.

Four carriers have planned rate hikes for Sept. 1:

  • CMA CGM will raise rates from Asia to North Europe, including the U.K. and the full range from Portugal to Russia, by $450 per TEU.
  • Mediterranean Shipping Co. will hike rates from Asia, excluding Japan but including Bangladesh, to the east and west Mediterranean, Black Sea, Adriatic, North Europe, U.K., Scandinavia and Baltic, as well as North Africa, by $500 per TEU.
  • Evergreen Line will implement a general rate increase in its trade from the Far East, including Japan, and the Indian subcontinent to Europe by $450 per 20-foot container and $900 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container, starting Sept. 1.
  • Zim Integrated Shipping Services will boost rates from the Far East to North Europe by $450 per TEU, starting Sept. 1.

Additionally, Maersk Line has announced it will hike Asia-Europe rates, starting Sept. 1.

Effective Sept. 5, Zim Integrated Shipping Services will hike rates from Asia to the Mediterranean and Black Sea by $500 per TEU.

Asia-Africa

Four container lines have planned rate increases for Sept. 1:

  • MSC will increase rates from the Middle East to West Africa by $200 and $400.
  • Delmas will hike rates on its westbound trade from the Far East to East Africa, including Kenya and Tanzania, by $300 per TEU, and to West Africa by $250 per TEU.  
  • Similarly, Emirates Shipping Line will increase rates for all westbound shipments from the Far East and Southeast Asia to East Africa by $300 per TEU.
  • Maersk Line will also hike rates from the Far East to East Africa by $300 per 20-foot container and $600 per 40-foot and 40-foot high-cube container.

Trans-Pacific

CMA CGM has planned several rate hikes for Sept. 1:

  • From the U.S. to the Far East, the increase will be $80 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot and 45-foot container.
  • For shipments from Asia, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, directly to Vancouver, British Columbia, the hike will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container and $510 per 45-foot container. For shipments to inland points intermodal in Canada, the hike will be $480 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high-cube container and $760 per 45-foot container.
  • From Northeast and Southeast Asia to U.S. West Coast ports of discharge or door deliveries, the hike will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container, $510 per 45-foot container and $640 per 53-foot container. To U.S. West Coast ports’ rail or motor rail inland points, as well as U.S. East Coast of Gulf Coast ports of discharge, the hike will be $480 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high-cube container and $760 per 45-foot container. For 53-foot containers to U.S. West Coast rail or motor rail inland points, the hike will be $960.
  • For shipments from Indian subcontinent ports to the U.S. West Coast, the increase will be $320 per 20-foot container, $400 per 40-foot container, $450 per 40-foot high-cube container and $510 per 45-foot container. For shipments to the U.S. East Coast or Gulf Coast, the hike will be $480 per 20-foot container, $600 per 40-foot container, $675 per 40-foot high-cube container and $760 per 45-foot container.

Furthermore, beginning Sept. 15, Hapag-Lloyd will increase rates on forest products and wastepaper from British Columbia to Dalian, Shekou and Tianjin-Xingang, China, by $40 per 20-foot container and $50 per 40-foot container.

Trans-Atlantic

Two carriers have planned rate increases for Sept. 1:

  • MSC will boost rates on its trade from the Far East to South America’s east coast by $750 per 20-foot container and $1,500 per 40-foot container.
  • U.S. Lines will implement a general rate increase for cargo from the U.S. and Canada to the Far East by $80 per 20-foot container and $100 per 40-foot and 45-foot container. 

Starting Sept. 15, Hyundai Merchant Marine will increase export rates from Canada to ports in Asia by $80 per TEU and $100 per 40-foot-equivalent unit. 

Two container lines have also planned rate hikes for Oct. 1:

  • CMA CGM will increase rates from Europe to the east coast of South America. From North Europe and the Baltic, the increase will be $200 per TEU, and from the Mediterranean, the hike will be $150 per TEU.
  • MSC will raise rates in its trade from the U.S., Canada and Mexico to the west Mediterranean by $100 per 20-foot container and $150 per 40-foot container.

Effective Week 41 (Oct. 7), MSC will also implement a rate increase of €150 (about US$200) per TEU on cargo from the west Mediterranean and North Europe to South America’s east coast.

North America-South America

Hapag-Lloyd has scheduled two rate hikes for Oct. 1:

  • From the U.S. and east coast of Canada to Latin America, the increase will be $100 per 20-foot container and $150 per 40-foot container.
  • For agricultural products, including pulses, beans and lentils, from the U.S. West Coast and Canada’s west coast to Latin America, the hike will be $150 per 20-foot container.
