Southampton has opened its latest berth 'SCT5' boasting a new 500 metre quay adapted to docking 18,000-TEU vessels.
The berth quay cost GBP100 million (US$167.1 million) and with a depth of 16 metres, dredging allowances mean that SCT5 can be further deepened to 17 metres should future growth be needed, according to a British International Forwarders Association (BIFA) newsletter.
The quayside has four new Liebherr super postpanamax cranes capable of reaching across ships 24 containers wide, and a final fifth crane is to be relocated to a different area of the terminal to ensure fast turnaround times.
