ALASKAN-based Northern Air Cargo (NAC) has upgraded its fleet through the addition of three Boeing 737-200 freighters to replace the company's aging fleet of 727 aircraft.
The first of the three new aircraft will fly the Bethel, Nome and Kotzebue routes, a company statement said.
"The introduction of the B-737 to our current air cargo fleet represents the beginning of a new era for Northern Air Cargo," said Stephanie Holthaus, NAC's vice-president of cargo.
NAC plans to introduce two more 737 cargo aircraft into its Alaskan domestic network by the end of May, completing its current fleet modernisation plan. However, it will continue to use Douglas DC-6 aircraft to provide charters.
NAC performs logistics, air, ground and maintenance support for large and small industries including oil and gas, mining, construction and wild Alaska seafood.
