Lufthansa Cargo recently flew three koala bears between Frankfurt and Edinburgh – as Economy Class passengers; and Etihad Crystal Cargo flew a five-year-old elephant from Colombo to Beijing.
One koala was flown from Frankfurt to Edinburgh on February 22nd, and two others were flown from Edinburgh to Frankfurt on February 26th. The koala bears were transported in special boxes in the last row of the Lufthansa passenger cabin.
According to Peter Linhart, head of animal transports at Vienna Zoo & chairman of the European Association of Zoos & Aquariums, Transport Working Group, the animals could not be transported in the cargo hold because the international koala co-ordinator at San Diego Zoo stipulated that the animals had to be supervised throughout the transport by an animal keeper.
In other news, Chapman Freeborn Singapore recently transported a five-year-old elephant on board an Etihad Crystal Cargo A300-600 freighter from Colombo, Sri Lanka, to Beijing, People’s Republic of China.
The elephant, along with a 4 tonne stone Buddha statue, was a gift from the government of Sri Lanka to the government of China for the Chinese New Year.
Weighing in at approximately 1,000 kg, the male elephant was transported in a specially designed cage, and was accompanied by a veterinarian, two mahouts and a curator.
