The International Longshore and Warehouse Union, which represents the workers who handle cargo at 29 West Coast ports, has asked Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to veto legislation that would levy a fee of up to US$60 on each FEU going through the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach and Oakland to pay for pollution-reduction programmes, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Fees totalling between $150 and $200 per FEU are already being levied or are set to begin by early next year at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach or along the rail route just outside the harbour.
The fees are designed to reduce peak-hour congestion and fund a clean-truck programme, among other things.
