SCI puts new vessels into intra-Asia service

11/12/2008 9:36:57 AM

State-run Shipping Corp. of India has deployed four new 4,400-TEU vessels in its IndFex1 service, which it operates with "K" Line and PIL.

The service links Nhava Sheva and Colombo with Klang, Singapore, Hong Kong, Shanghai and Busan, with a 16-day transit time from India to South Korea and a 35-day round trip.

SCI is India's biggest shipping line by capacity, and decided against deploying the new vessels in the India/Europe trade since trade between Asia and Europe has been on the decline this year. The other five ships in the service have average capacities of 2,500 TEUs.

The three carriers also collaborate on a service between Chennai and the Far East, the IndFex 2, which uses ships of smaller capacities than the IndFex 1. SCI's lone liner service to Europe is in partnership with ZIM, Yang Ming, MISC and "K" Line.
