Container and cargo-handling volume at Kaohsiung Harbor, Taiwan's largest commercial seaport, have increased noticeably over the past month since direct cross-strait shipping links were inaugurated December 15, 2008, Asia in Focus reported.
Kaohsiung Harbor's container loading and unloading volume had increased by 22,808 TEUs as of the beginning of this week, while bulk cargo handled at the port increased by 152,519 tonnes, representing a shot in the arm for Kaohsiung in the face of the global economic downturn, the authorities said.
Kaohsiung Harbor authorities estimated that the container traffic at the port will increase by one million TEUs per year after the opening of direct cross-strait shipping links following a hiatus of six decades.
The opening of direct cross-strait shipping links is poised to help raise Kaohsiung Harbor's status in the world's container port standings, which has fallen to eighth in the world in 2008 from third in 2000.
