On September 21st, 2010 Maersk Vietnam Limited celebrated the School Handover Ceremony upon completion of the Renovation project of Thanh Ngai Primary School in Mo Cay Bac District, Ben Tre Province. The ceremony had the participation of representatives of Maersk Vietnam, the Central Youth Union, different Government entities of Ben Tre Province, and all the teachers and pupils of Thanh Ngai Primary School who are the beneficiary of this project.
Thanh Ngai primary school had eight classrooms in total of which five have been . Three of them were built in 1991, mainly made of coconut wood which has been deteriorating and unable to offer a good shelter during the rain season. The rest two classrooms were also in very bad conditions with broken brick grounds and leaking roofs. Having seen the poor conditions of the school, Maersk decided to sponsor USD10,000 to fully renovate the whole 5 classes so that the teachers and children here can have better conditions for teaching and learning.
Mr. Peter Smidt-Nielsen, general director of Maersk Vietnam said: “We are delighted to be able to contribute to a better environment for teaching and learning also here in Ben Tre Province. Within our company we search for constant improvement and we are happy to support the same ideas of learning in local communities in Vietnam.”
The School now had a new face with new classrooms where the teachers and pupils of Thanh Ngai Primary School can enjoy their lessons and no longer afraid of getting wet under the rain or sweaty under the fierce sun.
The phrase “Nurturing the next generations” has become Maersk’s slogan in its corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects. This is the fourth year Maersk sponsors for school renovation in Vietnam nationwide where the school infrastructure is still very poor and people’s life is still of low quality. Maersk Vietnam has been partnering with the Central Youth Union of Vietnam for the course of development of Education of Vietnam.
This is a part of a series of CSR activities of Maersk this year, which will be followed by Maersk bicycles day in October, Lunch for the elderly in November and Christmas - New Year celebration for poor children in December.
