The volume of container cargo handled at South Korea's seaports rose to a record high for September, thanks to a rise in export and import traffic, according to Yonhap New Agency.
The volume of containers handled reached 1.54 million TEUs last month, up 8.3 percent from a year earlier, according to the report by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
While overall volume fell below 1.6 million TEUs for the first time since April, the figure is the highest reached for the cited month.
The ministry said September is usually a "slow month" because both South Korea and China give workers several days off during the fall harvest holidays.
In the first nine months of the year, containers handled by South Korea reached 14.35 million TEUs, up 21.5 percent from a year earlier, according to the ministry.
Busan, the nation's largest port city on the southeastern coast, handled more than 1.14 million TEUs of container cargo last month, up 10 percent from a year earlier.
Cargo processed at the port of Gwangyang on the south coast came to 163,000 TEUs, while the volume at Incheon, just west of Seoul, totalled 149,000 TEUs during the cited period, the ministry report said.
