Container traffic at Savannah and auto shipments at Brunswick, Ga., posted double-digit increases in November from last year’s volumes, the Georgia Port Authority said.
Savannah’s container volume reached 222,281 20-foot equivalent units in November, an 11.5 percent increase from November 2009 but a sign that the peak season came to abrupt halt at the port. The container fell 18.7 percent from the month before to its lowest level since February.
With container volume up 21.9 percent in the first 11 months of the calendar year from the recession levels of the previous year, Savannah was on track heading into December to surpass the port's annual record set in 2008.
“The Port of Savannah experienced moderate gains in November, following (a) very strong peak season,” said Curtis J. Foltz, the ports authority’s executive director. “We remain cautiously optimistic about future volumes through the ports and continue to prepare for larger vessels, currently calling on the U.S. East Coast.”
The GPA’s Brunswick terminal handled 39,222 auto units in November, which is an increase of 34.6 percent compared with November 2009.
