Maersk to Enhance Trans-Pacific Services, Add Ports

3/3/2011 9:52:09 AM

Maersk Line plans to enhance its trans-Pacific service network at the end of May by expanding port coverage to the Yangtze River and other outlying cities.

Maersk has listed seven service changes in its announcement, including the use of larger vessels on some services and the addition of new ports.

Maersk said the TP1 service, which is operated as a vessel-sharing alliance with CMA CGM and Mediterranean Shipping Co., will deploy larger vessels and add midweek delivery to Los Angeles for reliable connections to weekend trains.

The TP2 service, which is operated by MSC as a VSA with Maersk Line and CMA CGM, will add coverage from South and Central China to and from the U.S. West Coast with a new call in Ningbo.

The TP8 service, which is operated jointly by CMA CGM and MSC as a VSA with Maersk, will add a new call at Qingdao, China, using ‘S’ class vessels.

Maersk will deploy larger vessels on the TP3 and the TP9 all-water services to meet increased demand to and from U.S. East Coast markets.

The Danish carrier said it will expand its port coverage of Japan with five Panamax-size U.S.-flag vessels on the TP5 service, but did not identify the ports it plans to call.

It will operate the TP6 service with what it said would be a focus on delivering the “highest reliability” from Southeast Asia and China to and from the U.S. West Coast.

Finally, it said it would dedicate its TP7 service to the U.S. East using Panamax vessels focusing on direct calls at U.S. South Atlantic ports.
