VOLGA-DNEPR Airlines' AN-124-100 Ruslan freighter has successfully transported a 63-tonne ice skating rink to Guatemala to support the Russian city of Sochi's bid to host the 2014 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
The shipment departed for Guatemala from Moscow's Domodedovo Airport. The large skating rink is currently being built at the site where the International Olympic Committee meets at the start of July to choose a host city for the 2014 winter games. The ice rink will form the main arena for Russia's final presentation to the Olympic Committee.
The Russian government has pledged US$12 billion through the federal target programme to guarantee that the Games in Sochi will be delivered on time and within the budget if the city is nominated.
On July 3, a Russian delegation headed by President Vladimir Putin will arrive in Guatemala to support Sochi's bid for the Games, a statement from Volga-Dnepr said.
The International Olympic Committee will vote on July 4 to choose the city to host the XXII Winter Olympic Games 2014. In addition to Sochi, the other cities bidding to stage the games are South Korea's PyeongChang and Salzburg in Austria.
