APM Terminals and its local joint venture partner have signed a twenty-year concession agreement with the government of Angola to operate the country’s main container port.
The local company of record operating the container terminal is Luanda-based Sogester, a joint venture between APM (51%) and Gestao de Fundos (49%).
Angola’s double-digit GDP growth is expected to continue in the years ahead, and there is continued development of hinterland road and rail links to boost economic development and international trade.
Simon Pitout, head of APM Terminals Africa Region, based in Cape Town, South Africa, commented: “This new facility increases APM Terminals’ African presence and complements our existing facilities in Lagos and Onne (Nigeria), Douala (Cameroon), Abidjan (Cote d’Ivoire) and Tema (Ghana).”
He added that Sogester will make substantial investments and improvements to the container yard, quayside and terminal handling equipment. The aim is to develop Luanda Container Terminal into a world-class facility and a leading container terminal in the region.
Headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, APM Terminals owns and/or operates more than 45 terminals, serving approximately 60 shipping lines. The facilities generated a throughput of 28.4 million TEU in 2006.
