The government has retaken control of Air Senegal from Royal Air Maroc, following financial losses at the Senegalese national carrier. Yoro Sarr, adviser to the minister, said the state has decided to take back the running of Air Senegal International and will proceed with a recapitalisation. The state will own 75 percent. Air Senegal International was formed in 2000 as an affiliate of the Moroccan flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM), which took a controlling 51 percent stake. Air Senegal was voted Best African Airline Company in 2003. Sarr said that under RAM's tutelage, Air Senegal accumulated losses of US$28.44 million. The Senegalese state would take on the recapitalisation of the company and a commission would decide what would be done with the 25 percent stake still in the hands of RAM. Sarr said the state is not going to rule out any possible alliance to make Air Senegal the top company in the sub-region. The Moroccan airline would still be responsible for the moment for providing technical support to Air Senegal.
