Finnish air traffic controllers walked out in protest over labour talks yesterday, causing delays of about 20 flights to and from Finland.
During the two-hour strike, controllers guided down arriving aircraft, but grounded departing flights by not giving them clearance to take off. Many flights were expected to be delayed several hours.
National carrier Finnair said that it would postpone some European flights, including flights to Warsaw, Poland, and that several others from central Europe would be delayed by up to two hours.
The Finnish Air Traffic Controllers Association said the strike to protest is the result of a lack of cooperation by their employer, Finavia, which is in labour talks with the union. The dispute involves pay and bonuses.
Finavia described the action as illegal because of a civil service collective agreement in force between Finavia and the air traffic controllers.
