Starting from 13 May, Estonian Air introduces fuel surcharge in the amount of 10EUR (155 EEK) on the scheduled Helsinki, Vilnius and Kuressaare-Stockholm routes and 15EUR (235 EEK) on the rest of the scheduled services.
The price of jet fuel has risen more than 40 percent over the last three months and is now 80 percent higher than last year. The fuel cost forms a significant part of airline operations costs.
The fuel price further movements are unknown and this is putting the whole aviation industry under a pressure. Yet Estonian Air sees a possibility to offer competitive fares also in the future.
Estonian Air started already in 2006 a program for more economic fuel use. In the course of the program, the route of every flight, loading of every plane, its takeoff and landing is planned very exactly in order to guarantee the smallest possible fuel costs. Lower fuel costs also help to reduce the CO2 emissions.
In one year, the program has helped to save 5% on fuel. Future steps for saving on fuel are being considered and analyzed constantly.
