FEFC imposes Vietnam congestion surcharge

7/3/2008 11:57:19 AM

The outgoing Far Eastern Freight Conference’s (FEFC) member lines have reacted to the worsening port congestion situation at Vietnamese ports and are to implement a surcharge of USD50 per TEU - to apply for both eastbound and westbound cargo - effective on or after July 15, 2008.

Meanwhile, in the South Korean port of Busan, operations have almost ground to a halt as a truckers’ strike, in protest at skyrocketing fuel costs, entered it sixth day following a breakdown of talks with the government.

Busan Port is ranked fifth in the world and had a throughput of 13.3 million TEU in 2007. It accounts for 80% of South Korea’s container traffic.
