29 US West Coast ports face disruption

7/7/2008 9:56:20 AM

Twenty-nine ports in the US states of California, Oregon and Washington are threatened by work stoppages as the unions and the employers failed to agree on a new employment contract, according to the Financial Times.

Among the ports potentially facing disruption are the ones in Los Angeles and Long Beach, which account for 40 percent of container imports in the US.

After the previous labour agreement expired on Tuesday, port employers tried to extend the contract until a final document is agreed upon. As the unions refused to have the contract extended, employers do not rule out work disruptions.

The agreement seems difficult to reach because of the controversial role of technology, whose stronger presence is set to lead to job cuts.
