Maersk Line adds tanker to fleet

8/30/2008 10:09:03 AM

The U.S.- flag shipping arm of the A.P. - Moller Maersk Group has added a tanker to its fleet.

Maersk Line Ltd. said it purchased the Panamanian-flag product tanker Marco, which will be reflagged as a U.S. ship and renamed the Maersk Michigan in early September.

The double-hull, medium-range tanker has a capacity of 47,000 deadweight tons and was built in 2003.

Maersk said it would provide U.S. government customers, such as the Defense Energy Support Center, with expanded petroleum transport capacity around the world.

The ship will have a 19-member crew who will be members of the American Maritime Officers and Seafarers International Union.

Maersk Line Ltd. operates a fleet of 61 vessels: 28 U.S. government ships, 24 commercial containerships, two pure car/truck carrier roll-on/roll-off ships, three combination/general cargo ships, two tankers, and two ships in the dry bulk trade.
