US airlines carrying more cargo

9/6/2010 10:25:39 AM

Cargo carried by US airlines increased 19% in June, compared with the same month last year, driven by increased international trade, according to the Air Transport Association of America (ATA).

Data reported to ATA by Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, FedEx, Hawaiian Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, UPS and US Airways, showed traffic increased 8% domestically and 28% internationally in the month.

Annually, commercial aviation helped drive more than US$1 trillion into US economic activity, said ATA.

On a daily basis, US carriers operated approximately 25,000 flights in 80 countries, using more than 6,000 aircraft to carry an average of 50,000 tonnes of cargo.

ATA airline members and their affiliates transport more than 90% of all US airline cargo traffic.
