Frankfurt airport announced a major expansion of freight facilities to keep pace with surging shipments.
Europe's largest cargo hub is offering an additional 67 acres of land for development at CargoCitySouth, its main freight complex. Frankfurt is number six on the JOC list of Top 30 International Cargo Airports.
Project planning for the approximately 30,000 square meters of hall space -- about one third of the new development area -- will be implemented in a first phase that will come on stream between 2013 and 2014.
Frankfurt's air cargo traffic hit a monthly high of 191,480 metric tons in July, a 20.1 percent increase from a year ago. This boosted traffic for the first seven months of the year to 1.3 million metric tons, an increase of 28.8 percent on the same period in 2009.
