Frankfurt Airport recorded more than two million metric tons of airfreight in 2006, one year, having nearly reached that mark the previous year when it posted 1.9 million tons, according to an airport statement.
“Germany’s largest airport has now broken the statistical sound barrier,” said an airport statement. “By the end of November the increase in airfreight throughput was 9.1 percent compared to the previous 2005 record year.”
The Far East’s share increased to 45.4 percent. North America share accounted for 21.4 percent. For January-November 2006, the share of cargo transported by freighters at Frankfurt Airport climbed to 59 percent with most of the rest travelling in the bellyholds of passenger jets.
Some 87 percent of Frankfurt airfreight was carried on intercontinental routes with the leading categories being information technology products, textiles, industrial goods, perishables (fish, fruits and vegetables, etc.) and pharmaceuticals.
Frankfurt also enjoyed a new monthly historical airfreight record in November 2006, when 187,307 metric tons came through the terminal. The previous peak month was March when airfreight hit the 184,414 ton mark.
The first time Frankfurt exceeded an annual one million ton figure was in 1988. In 2000, more than 1.5 million metric tons went through the airport for the first time, the airport said.
