Mundra hosts biggest vessel to berth in India

6/7/2013 8:55:08 AM

India's maritime history added a new chapter with the berthing of around 1,200 ft long vessel, MSC Valeria, at Adani Ports & SEZ-run Mundra Port in Kutch, reported the Times of India.

Three times the size of a football field, the vessel is the biggest ever vessel to visit any port in India.

Why the berthing is a nautical milestone for the country can be understood from the fact that MSC Valeria has capacity of over 14,000 TEUs, while the average container ship size in India is less than 4,000 TEUs. There are only 35 ports in the world that can handle vessels of 14,000 TEUs capacity.

Mundra Port is the second biggest among Indian ports in terms of total cargo handled during the financial year 2013. Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ) operates three container terminals in the Kutch district. MSC Valeria berthed at the new container terminal, which has one of the deepest docks in India and state-of-the art container cranes.
