THE Port of New Orleans berthed, at its Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal, its longest containership ever, the 8,000-TEU MSC Judith at 1,066 feet.
Port CEO Gary LaGrange said the berthing is a signal of confidence in New Orleans handling ability, along with other global ocean carriers which include Hapag-Lloyd, CMA CGM, Maersk, Zim, Seaboard, CSAV, Libra and the now the Mediterranean Shipping Co.
"With our 150-gauge gantry cranes installed two years ago, the Port has the ability to efficiently work more than 9,000-TEU vessels," Mr LaGrange said, reported the American Journal of Transportation.
The Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal has an annual capacity of 640,000 TEU, but hopes to increase this to more than 840,000 TEU after construction of its Mississippi River Intermodal Terminal.
